The Access Internet Project is three years old! As a now steadily expanding project, we cater to isolated seniors in the downtown area. Our goal is to introduce basic computer and Internet skills to seniors by matching them with a volunteer that meets them directly at their home for one-on-one tutorials.
Participants of Access Internet benefit in many different ways from this program. It allows seniors to participate in stimulating learning activities without having to leave their apartment (a valuable service for those of us with mobility problems!). Moreover, it provides seniors with a great way to break isolation and to keep in touch with distant relatives and friends while giving them the opportunity to widen their social circles through online chatting. By demystifying these new technologies, we aim to make the computer a tool for seniors to develop new skills and interest through a new means of communication : the Internet.
