"Willow"

Jazz Trio with Kerrie Moss on keyboards & Wayne Smith on bass.

Willow Quig is a singer/songwriter who is fresh, fun and engaging. Her sound is a hybrid of folk, jazz and blues. Her voice is warm and intimate with a velvet texture.
Willow’s lyrics tell real stories and are sung with honesty and conviction. Her first full length original CD, You Still Do, draws the listener into her musical world with a blend of rich moving love songs and mature lyrics.

Her soft blues folk compositions, her inviting arrangements, all marketable and smooth, are often compared to those of Norah Jones and Eva Cassidy. Her alto voice has been likened to that of Karen Carpenter’s for its intimate deep rich sound. Willow always sounds as if she’s singing just for you – right into your ear.

Growing up, the Quig home was always alive with music ranging from classical to jazz to good rock & roll and lots of great American Songbook singers – Ella, Frank, Tony, Sarah Vaughn and her favourites: Carmen McRae and Rosemary Clooney. This gave her a firm grasp of good music and how to tell a story and make it real. Willow then fell in love with the songwriting genres of James Taylor and Sting. This melting pot of influences has inspired her to create her very own sound on You Still Do.

After graduation, she performed in Montreal with a variety of musical groupings including the Montreal Jazz Big Band. This was followed by singing engagements all over the world – Japan, the Middle East, Spain and England. She cruised the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas performing to audiences seven days a week. This experience taught her how to craft a stage show and entertain with her songs.
This brings us back to Montreal where Willow completed her first CD, You Still Do, produced with her song-writing partner and husband Kerrie Moss and her long time musical partner Larry Cassini. It has been received with glowing reviews: “She writes songs that are tasty.” (Ralph Boncy, L’actualité, Octobre 2006).

Summer 2006, she brought down the house night after night during a featured concert series at the Metropolis as part of the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Alexandre Vigneault from La Presse came to the Savoy for one of her nine concerts and wrote this review: “It’s a real treat to savour her silky voice and that chic melancholy.”
Willow is getting air play on CBC radio, and the new Montreal jazz radio station Couleur Jazz (91.9 FM) has been playing her tunes daily since they were blown away by her unique style.

Jacob and Lily

“Jacob and Lily have realised less is more, and the result is a sense of musical communion that may well be overpowering when heard live” John Kendle, Editor, Uptown Magazine - Winnipeg, MB

Unstoppable passion, a fierce commitment to their audience, relentless touring in the G-Bus, a 35-ft Bounder RV; all elements which have founded Jacob and Lily as one of Canada’s newest must see acts. In only a few moments this endearing duo will take you from tears to laughter; all the while gently weaving a tapestry of thoughtful, nearly spiritual moments which will linger long after the final note is played. With their unique and organic sound; Jacob and Lily are the freshest act to emerge from Winnipeg’s rich music community.

Complex fusion-style rhythms and innovative, spontaneous songs create an electric atmosphere that captivates their audiences. Incorporating the cajon beat box, world percussion instruments and a partial drum kit, Caleb Friesen is the perfect compliment to Karla Adolphe’s soaring vocals.

Jacob and Lily did not record a second of thier debut album, The Cathedral, in a studio rather each track was recorded on location in various Winnipeg venues hand picked to capture Jacob and Lily’s organic sound. Jacob and Lily have had multiple tracks included on compilations such as the 2007 Manitoba Music CD, Bridge Songs Compilation, 2006 Manitoba Roots CD, as well as national airplay on CBC Radio programs like Definitely Not the Opera and Freestyle and collegiate/regional programs throughout Canada and the US.

In 18 short months these two have played over 230 shows across North America and sold 2000 copies of their new album. These full time gypsies are 21st century pioneers happily redefining the terms of their success.

Nathan Bishop

“Iconoclastic”. “Soulful”. “Vivid”. These are words that have been used to describe singer/songwriter Nathan Bishop. Raised in the vibrant music scene of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Nathan’s youth was steeped in music of every variety.

Bishop’s music effortlessly crosses genres - Rock, Hip-Hop, Alt-Folk, Celtic, Spoken Word - resulting in a musical synergy that is simultaneously nostalgic and fresh and unmistakably "Nathan". Nathan has honed his craft to a devastatingly vibeacious level, influenced by such greats as Tom Petty, Neil Young, Jack Johnson, the Cranberries, Wyclef Jean, Everlast and Stan Rogers.

Nathan's songs are poignant and political, sexy and shrewd, delivered in a voice that is soul and satin over whiskey and razor blades. Singer, poet, multi-instrumentalist, MC - however you choose to refer to him, you will never forget Nathan Bishop's infectious groove and truly remarkable songwriting talents.

ELAN, the English-Language Arts Network, is a Quebec-wide network of English-speaking artists from all disciplines. As an organization the great thing about the nature of ELAN is how it offers artists from all disciplines a chance to meet, come together, and make connections.  Membership is free of charge and the website offers a wide range of services for ELAN artist members (www.quebec-elan.org).  ELAN has received a project grant to explore more specifically the needs of the music community. Over the next few months we are surveying musicians and dancers to find out how ELAN can help them pursue their careers. Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey on the ELAN homepage (www.quebec-elan.org, see MAAP II Music Survey). Your input is invaluable to us!
