Cultural roulant
Now in phase II, the Cultural Roulant addresses the unique needs of both mobile and homebound seniors living in Montreal, reducing social isolation through engaging activities, community building, and resource referrals.
This project is possible thanks to our current funders:
Each month, we are present at low-income senior housing units in downtown Montreal. We facilitate activities like pet therapy, adaptive yoga, live music, and art for all residents; provide information and assistance with community resources; and bring youth volunteers to socialize with seniors.
Engaging homebound seniors living in Montreal has its challenges. In recent years, the YD has worked to help these seniors be active online. Despite our efforts, there remains a group of older, homebound seniors who do not wish to join life online. To address their unique needs and complement our home-based/online services, we offer a booklet mailed to homebound seniors every two months. The content drafted by professionals includes at home adapted exercises, seasonal recipes, engaging activities, and phone numbers for community resources.

The story of the Cultural Roulant...
Conceptualized during the pandemic in 2021, phase I of the Cultural Roulant aimed to reduce boredom and promote the well-being of seniors isolating at home. Friendly volunteers delivered books, games, CDs, and art supplies to their doors to help tackle the mental health challenges faced by many of the most vulnerable in our community during this extremely difficult time. We partnered with Atwater Library to offer access to their collection - phone requests could be made to librarians who kindly suggested materials based on the senior's interests and bagged the items for delivery.
As life returned to normal, seniors expressed their gratitude for the deliveries, but said they were no longer needed. In mid 2022, we moved to phase II to provide cultural items to lend, activities to build community, and resources and services to seniors' residences in and around downtown Montreal.
WE WERE ABLE TO LAUNCH THE ORIGINAL PROJECT THANKS TO FUNDING FROM THE FOLLOWING SUPPORTERS: Grace Dart Foundation, Foundation of Greater Montreal, the Gustav Levinschi Foundation, and the National Assembly of Québec - Office of Jennifer Maccarone.
