THE YELLOW DOOR hootenanny (open stage)
Join us on Friday nights for the Yellow Door's community music and poetry sharing intergenerational wellness activity known as the Yellow Door Hootenanny. The "Hootenanny" is essentially an Open Stage in which participants take turns performing for each other, fostering co-operation and collaboration, while breaking down social isolation. The event sometimes includes a half-hour set by a Featured Performer in the middle of the evening.
FRIDAYS -- DOORS OPEN 8PM -- 3625 rue Aylmer |
If you are interested in performing on a Friday night as an Open Stage performer, just show up and put your name in the hat between 8 and 8:30 pm (names will then be drawn to determine the order of performance). Open Stage performers are allowed one or two songs each (or spoken word performances) over the course of the evening, depending on how many people sign up that night.
The Featured Performers are booked in advance, generally from among the Open Stage participants If you are interested in being a Featured Performer, the best way to do so is to perform at a few of the Open Stages, and then speak to the Hootenanny Coordinator, Marc Nerenberg. If you are from out of town, and unable to attend the Open Stages, please contact Marc at [email protected].

The Yellow Door Coffeehouse originally began in the 1960s as a community outreach program to attract young people into the building. It quickly morphed into a folk music coffeehouse, such as were popular then, that ran 7 nights a week. It was a thriving music venue that attracted artists from across the country and beyond.
Over time, the basement space, like the Yellow Door itself, has transformed itself, in keeping with the Yellow Door’s mission as a non-profit organization dedicated to helping relieve social isolation through a variety of activities, while fostering intergenerational relationships between the aged and the young. To that end, the original coffeehouse space is now home to several varied Yellow Door community activities. Among these, there remains one significant holdover from the original coffeehouse itself: the weekly Open Stage Hootenanny (which first began in 1967).
The Yellow Door Friday Night Open Stage Hootenanny is a community music event where all are welcome to share words and music, performance and participation. It is now run under the umbrella of The Yellow Door Wellness Groups: we believe in the power of community music making to foster healthy collaborative relationships and wellness.
